What makes Garachico unique is its volcanic heritage. In 1706, the town was devastated by a volcanic eruption that destroyed most of its buildings and left the port unusable.

However, the town was rebuilt and has since become a symbol of resilience and determination. Today, visitors can still see the remnants of the eruption, including the lava rock pools that are now popular swimming spots.

Garachico has suffered from several fires throughout its history. The most devastating fire occurred in 1646 and destroyed much of the town. Despite this setback, the people of Garachico rebuilt their town and continued to thrive.

Natural Swimming Pools

The famous Garachico natural pools are a must-see for anyone visiting the town and are situated just a 4-minute walk from the main square.

The pools are formed by volcanic rock and offer a unique swimming experience.

Roque de Garachico

Roque de Garachico is a natural monument located just off the coast of Garachico. It is a large rock formation that rises out of the sea and is home to a variety of bird species.

Visitors can take a boat tour to get a closer look at the rock and the surrounding wildlife.

Castle of San Miguel

The Castle of San Miguel is a historic fortress located in Garachico. It was built in the 16th century to protect the town from pirate attacks.

Today, visitors can explore the castle and learn about its history. The castle also offers stunning views of the seafront and the surrounding area.

Mirador de Garachico

Mirador de Garachico is a lookout point located on a hill above the town. From here, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Garachico and the surrounding area.

On a clear day, it is even possible to see Mount Teide in the distance.

Festival in Garachico

I had the pleasure of attending the St Roch’s Festival in Garachico, Tenerife, and it was an unforgettable experience. The festival is held annually in August and is one of the most popular and traditional festivals in Tenerife.

The celebration begins with a Mass for pilgrims on August 16th at 9:30 am. After the Mass, at 2:00 pm, there is a procession carrying St Roch along the streets of Garachico, from the main square, Plaza de Ramón Arocha, to the saint’s chapel.

The procession is a beautiful sight to behold, with locals and visitors alike coming together to honour the patron saint of the town.

During the festival, various cultural and musical events take place, showcasing the rich heritage of Garachico. Visitors can expect to see traditional Canarian dances, hear live music, and enjoy delicious local cuisine.

One of the highlights of the festival is the fireworks display, which takes place on the final night. The fireworks are a spectacular sight against the backdrop of the night sky, and it’s a perfect way to end the festivities.

Icod de los Vinos Village near Garachico

Icod de los Vinos is a charming municipality located in the northwest of Tenerife, close to Garachico. The town is known for being home to both the oldest draco, or dragon, tree and also to the Cueva del Viento, which is the largest volcanic cave in the world.

With around 25,000 inhabitants, Icod de los Vinos is a must-visit destination for anyone travelling to Tenerife.

The town’s centre is very pretty, with a charming main square that is perfect for relaxing and enjoying a coffee or a drink. Icod de los Vinos is also famous for the cultivation of vines, which began as soon as the town was founded.

Due to the favourable conditions, vast agriculture was established in the valley of Icod right from the start.

One of the main attractions of Icod de los Vinos is the famous Drago Tree, said to be the oldest of its kind on the island. The tree is over 1,000 years old and is surrounded by a beautiful garden where visitors, for a small fee, can stroll and enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

The park also has a small museum where visitors can learn more about the history of the tree and its importance to the people of Tenerife.

Another must-see attraction in Icod de los Vinos is the Cueva del Viento, which is the largest volcanic cave in the world. The cave was formed by a volcanic eruption over 27,000 years ago and is an incredible natural wonder.

Visitors can explore the cave with a guided tour and learn more about its history and formation.

In addition to these attractions, Icod de los Vinos also has several excellent restaurants and bars where visitors can enjoy delicious local cuisine and drinks.

The town is also a great base for exploring the rest of Tenerife, with easy access to other popular destinations like Garachico and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Seafood in Garachico

As a seafood lover, Garachico was a delight to visit. The town is located right on the coast, making it a prime location for fresh seafood.

One of the best places to sample the local seafood is El Caletón, a natural seawater pool that has been converted into a seafood restaurant.

At El Caletón, I was able to enjoy a wide variety of seafood dishes, including grilled octopus, squid ink paella, and fresh fish caught that very same day. The restaurant’s location right on the ocean provided a beautiful view while I dined.

In addition to El Caletón, several other seafood restaurants in Garachico are worth checking out. Some of my other favourites include Restaurant La Perla, Restaurant La Almena de San Miguel, and Restaurant Silogia

When it comes to seafood in Garachico, it’s important to note that the town takes its fishing industry seriously. As a result, many of the seafood restaurants in the area offer fresh catches of the day.

This means that the menu can change depending on what has been caught, but it also means that you’re getting the freshest seafood possible.
