It is a popular tourist destination that attracts visitors from all over the world and for good reason. The town is known for its beautiful black sand beaches, stunning natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

As I walked 1 (read footnote for more information) through the winding streets of Puerto De La Cruz, I was struck by the town’s unique blend of old-world charm and modern amenities.

The town’s historic centre is filled with beautiful architecture, quaint cafes, and boutique shops, while the newer parts of town offer a wide range of restaurants, bars, and nightlife options.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing beach vacation or an exciting adventure, Puerto De La Cruz has something to offer everyone.

One of the town’s most popular attractions is Loro Parque, a world-renowned zoo and botanical garden that is home to a wide variety of fascinating animals and plants.

Visitors can see everything from orcas, dolphins and penguins to tigers and gorillas, and the park also offers a range of shows and exhibits that are both educational and entertaining.

Whether you’re travelling with kids or just looking for a fun day out, Loro Parque is worth a visit.

Beaches in Puerto De La Cruz, North Tenerife

Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife. Collage of the two best beaches.

When it comes to beaches in Puerto De La Cruz, there are a few options to choose from. Here are two of the most popular ones:

Playa del Castillo Beach

Playa del Castillo is a beach located in the area of Puerto De La Cruz near San Filipe fortress. It is a good option for those looking for a more secluded and peaceful spot to relax.

The beach is not as crowded as some of the other options and is surrounded by beautiful cliffs and rock formations. The sand is a mix of black and volcanic, which gives the beach a unique look.

There are some facilities available at Castillo Beach, such as showers and toilets, but it is not as developed as some of the other beaches. This makes it a good choice for those who prefer a more natural and unspoiled environment.

Playa Maria Jimenez Beach

Playa Maria Jimenez is one of the most popular beaches in Puerto De La Cruz. It is a stylish and distinctive beach due to its volcanic sand, which gives it a unique look.

The beach is surrounded by beautiful gardens and has plenty of facilities available, such as showers, toilets, and sun loungers.

Playa Maria Jimenez is a top spot for sun worshippers who journey to this charming seaside destination every year. The beach is well-developed, with some restaurants and bars nearby. It’s a great place to spend a day with family or friends.

Restaurants and Cafes in Puerto de la Cruz

Examples of the food served in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife.

When it comes to dining in Puerto De La Cruz, there’s no shortage of options. From traditional Spanish cuisine to international flavours, there’s something for everyone.

Puerto De La Cruz is known for its vibrant food scene. Here are a few restaurants that I highly recommend:

Ibericos Gastro-Bar: This bar offers a Spanish menu and a cosy atmosphere. I particularly love their tapas and their selection of local wines;

El Taller Seve Diaz: This Mediterranean restaurant is a tad pricier place, but it’s worth it for the delicious food and the stunning views of the ocean. They offer a tasting menu that’s perfect for a special occasion;

Vinoteca Con Pasion: This wine bar has a great selection of wines from all over Spain, and their tapas are also top-notch. It’s a great spot for a casual night out with friends.

Mini Golf Club Restaurant: Nestled in the heart of Puerto de la Cruz, just a short distance from a serene botanical garden, this restaurant invites you to play a round of 18 holes of Minigolf while savouring high-quality cuisine at exceptionally reasonable prices. From flavorful pizzas to succulent meats and fresh fish, each dish is crafted with a homemade touch. The menu showcases a blend of international and Canarian flavours, providing a diverse and satisfying dining experience. To elevate your evenings, relish the enchanting ambience with live music every night.

Puerto de la Cruz: A Year-Round Weather with a Unique Mediterranean Charm

View towards Puerto de la Cruz town and Mount Teide from Lago Martiznez sea water pool.

Nestled in the cooler Northern part of the island, Puerto de la Cruz boasts a warm Mediterranean-like climate that sets it apart.

Situated at the base of the La Orotava valley, the town enjoys a unique advantage, receiving less rain and more hours of sunshine compared to the rest of the northern region.

While the climate may be less predictable than in the south, Puerto de la Cruz’s appeal stretches far and wide, accommodating diverse holidaymakers throughout the year.

Weather in Summer

Running from early June to late September, Puerto de la Cruz experiences average temperatures of 17-20 degrees Celsius. Prepare for occasional heat waves, with highs exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in July and August.

Despite minimal rainfall, you’ll enjoy hours of sunshine for beach activities.

September stands out with the warmest sea temperatures at around 24 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time to visit with fewer crowds.

Weather in Autumn

Mild temperatures ranging between 16-18 degrees Celsius characterize autumn. The town becomes less crowded, offering a quieter experience.

October is popular for golf holidays, while November sees a slight increase in rainfall. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, dropping to 22 degrees Celsius in November.

Weather in Winter

Winters, though the wettest and coldest, are still mild compared to much of Europe. Temperatures average between 12-14 degrees Celsius.

December is the wettest month, but you can catch some sunshine, with the sea temperature staying warm at around 21 degrees Celsius.

Smaller crowds and lower hotel prices make it an attractive option for a winter escape – outside of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays of course.

Weather in Spring

March brings some wet days, but by May, rainfall decreases significantly. Daily averages range from 14-17 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time for a sunny holiday.

With 9-10 hours of daily sunshine, spring is perfect for golf, sightseeing, and beach activities. The sea temperature in May is a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius.

Weather Risks to be aware of

While Puerto de la Cruz is generally calm, July and August can see temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.

Calima dust storms from the Sahara may occur, causing high temperatures and low visibility. Though the town is sheltered, it’s advisable to stay in air-conditioned spaces during these extreme conditions.

In conclusion, Puerto de la Cruz stands as a year-round haven with a unique Mediterranean-like charm. It’s strategic location and favourable climate make it a destination that caters to a diverse array of visitors.

Whether you’re seeking a tranquil winter retreat or a sun-soaked summer escape, Puerto de la Cruz offers an idyllic setting for a memorable holiday experience.

Attractions Tenerife

So, what would you choose? The warmth of summer, the mildness of autumn, the tranquillity of winter, or the blossoming beauty of spring?

In my opinion, the best time to visit Puerto de la Cruz in North Tenerife is early autumn and late spring.

Happy Travels!
