Nestled in the cooler Northern part of the island, Puerto de la Cruz boasts a warm Mediterranean-like climate that sets it apart.
Situated at the base of the La Orotava valley, the town enjoys a unique advantage, receiving less rain and more hours of sunshine compared to the rest of the northern region.
While the climate may be less predictable than in the south, Puerto de la Cruz’s appeal stretches far and wide, accommodating diverse holidaymakers throughout the year.
Weather in Summer
Running from early June to late September, Puerto de la Cruz experiences average temperatures of 17-20 degrees Celsius. Prepare for occasional heat waves, with highs exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in July and August.
Despite minimal rainfall, you’ll enjoy hours of sunshine for beach activities.
September stands out with the warmest sea temperatures at around 24 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time to visit with fewer crowds.
Weather in Autumn
Mild temperatures ranging between 16-18 degrees Celsius characterize autumn. The town becomes less crowded, offering a quieter experience.
October is popular for golf holidays, while November sees a slight increase in rainfall. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, dropping to 22 degrees Celsius in November.
Weather in Winter
Winters, though the wettest and coldest, are still mild compared to much of Europe. Temperatures average between 12-14 degrees Celsius.
December is the wettest month, but you can catch some sunshine, with the sea temperature staying warm at around 21 degrees Celsius.
Smaller crowds and lower hotel prices make it an attractive option for a winter escape – outside of the Christmas and New Year’s Eve holidays of course.
Weather in Spring
March brings some wet days, but by May, rainfall decreases significantly. Daily averages range from 14-17 degrees Celsius, making it an ideal time for a sunny holiday.
With 9-10 hours of daily sunshine, spring is perfect for golf, sightseeing, and beach activities. The sea temperature in May is a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius.
Weather Risks to be aware of
While Puerto de la Cruz is generally calm, July and August can see temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
Calima dust storms from the Sahara may occur, causing high temperatures and low visibility. Though the town is sheltered, it’s advisable to stay in air-conditioned spaces during these extreme conditions.
In conclusion, Puerto de la Cruz stands as a year-round haven with a unique Mediterranean-like charm. It’s strategic location and favourable climate make it a destination that caters to a diverse array of visitors.
