La Laguna

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is a city and municipality located in the northern part of the island of Tenerife in the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, on the Canary Islands, Spain.

The city was founded in the late 15th century on an inland plateau 550 m above sea level next to an insalubrious lagoon. It was the first non-fortified Spanish colonial town and was the model for several colonial cities in Latin America.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The city is known for its well-preserved historic center, which features a unique blend of Canarian, Spanish, and American architectural styles.

The city’s layout is based on a grid pattern with wide streets and plazas, which is typical of Spanish colonial towns. The city’s historic center is also home to several important landmarks, including the Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, which is considered one of the most important religious buildings in the Canary Islands.
