History of the Auditorio de Tenerife

Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Auditorio de Tenerife is a cultural centre located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. As early as 1970, there was an agreement that the creation of an auditorium for the islands should proceed.

The location in the El Ramonal was approved in 1977. In 1978, design proposals were solicited for consideration. The project agreed to appoint the architect Antonio Fernández Alba.

In 1989, contact with the architect Santiago Calatrava began, who would eventually design the plans. 1991 was the year when the preliminary design of the Auditorio de Tenerife was presented, located at the end of the Tres de Mayo avenue of the capital. The year 1992 marked the creation of the Supervision and Control Commission.

Finally, the construction began in 1997 and ended in 2003. The inauguration took place on September 23 of that year.

Inauguration

The Auditorio de Tenerife was inaugurated on September 23, 2003, with a concert by the Tenerife Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Víctor Pablo Pérez. The opening ceremony was attended by the King and Queen of Spain, Juan Carlos I and Sofía.

Since its inauguration, the Auditorium has become an icon of the Canary Islands. Its unique design and acoustics have made it a reference for music lovers around the world.

Concept and Architecture of Auditorio de Tenerife

Auditorio de Tenerife in Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The architecture of the Auditorium is a unique blend of Spanish and modern styles. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the building is a stunning example of contemporary architecture.

Let’s take a closer look at the different aspects of the building’s design.

Spanish Architecture

The Auditorio de Tenerife is a prime example of Spanish architecture. The building’s design is influenced by the traditional architecture of the Canary Islands, which is characterized by its use of volcanic stone and white plaster.

The building’s white exterior and curved shapes are reminiscent of the island’s traditional architecture.

Torres de Santa Cruz

One of the most distinctive features of the Auditorio de Tenerife is the Torres de Santa Cruz.

These two towers rise on either side of the building and are connected by a bridge. The towers are a nod to the island’s history as a watchtower for pirates and invaders.

The Torres de Santa Cruz adds a touch of drama to the building’s design and is a popular spot for visitors to take photos.

Organ Pipes

The Auditorio de Tenerife is also famous for its organ pipes. The pipes are located on the back wall of the stage and are designed to resemble the pipes of a church organ.

The pipes are not just decorative, they are also functional. The organ is one of the largest in Spain and is used in concerts and performances held at the Auditorio.

The building is a stunning example of contemporary Spanish architecture. The building’s unique design elements, such as the Torres de Santa Cruz and the organ pipes, make it a popular destination for visitors to the Canary Islands.

Construction

Auditorio de Tenerife, Santa Cruz de Tenerife

When I visited the Auditorio de Tenerife, I was struck by its unique design and the use of concrete to create a wave-like structure.

Here are some details about the construction of this iconic building:

Concrete

The Auditorio de Tenerife is primarily made of concrete, which is a durable and strong material. The use of concrete allowed the architects to create the sweeping curves and angles that define the building’s design.

The concrete was poured on-site and then shaped and smoothed to create the desired effect.

One interesting fact is that the concrete used in the building’s construction was tinted with a special pigment to match the colour of the surrounding volcanic rock. This gives the building a cohesive look and helps it blend in with its surroundings.

Wave

The most striking feature of the Auditorio de Tenerife is its wave-like design. The building’s main auditorium is housed in a large, curved structure that resembles a breaking wave.

This design was inspired by the ocean and the building’s location on the waterfront.

To create the wave shape, the architects used a combination of concrete and steel. The steel was used to reinforce the concrete and provide additional support for the building’s weight.

The result is a stunning structure that is both functional and beautiful.
