History of the Los Realejos in Tenerife North

Los Realejos is a town located in the north of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. The town was formed by the unification of two villages, Realejo Alto and Realejo Bajo.

The area has a rich history, dating back to the time of the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands.

As a result of the Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands in the 15th century, the Guanches were forced to convert to Christianity.

Los Realejos was the place where the Guanche Menceys (kings) were baptized following the conquest in 1496. The town has since become a symbol of the Guanche resistance against the Spanish.

During the 16th century, Los Realejos became an important agricultural centre, with the cultivation of sugar cane being introduced to the area. The town’s socio-economic development was set on this path, and it has remained an important agricultural base to this day.

The town has also played an important role in the history of Tenerife‘s wine production. In the 18th century, Los Realejos became home to the first winery on the island.

The town’s winemaking tradition continues to this day, with several wineries still operating in the area.
