Vilaflor Tenerife: A Guide to the Highest Village in Spain

Visit Vilaflor, Tenerife and escape touristy areas. Enjoy a laid-back atmosphere and stunning views of Mount Teide. Find the best activities and attractions and discover the essence of the island.

Visit Vilaflor Tenerife

As I travelled through Tenerife, I was struck by the beauty of Vilaflor, a charming town nestled in the mountains. With its stunning views of Mount Teide and pine forests, Vilaflor offers a peaceful escape from the more touristy areas of the island.

One of the things I loved most about Vilaflor was its excellent atmosphere. The town has a laid-back vibe that makes it easy to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings.

However, it’s worth noting that some visitors have complained about poor cleanliness in certain areas, so it’s important to keep an eye out for any issues and report them to staff if necessary.

Overall, though, I found Vilaflor to be a clean and welcoming town with plenty to offer.

If you’re planning a trip to Vilaflor, there are a few general tips to keep in mind. The town is located inland, so it’s not right on the seafront, but it’s still within easy reach of the coast if you want to spend some time at the beach.

There are also plenty of great restaurants and bars in Vilaflor, including a popular spot where a local singer performs live music. With delicious food, friendly service, and a beautiful setting, Vilaflor is a must-visit destination in Spain.

Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway or a relaxing break with friends, Vilaflor has something for everyone.

Location Information about Vilaflor Tenerife

Vilaflor is a charming village located on the island of Tenerife, which is part of the Canary Islands in Spain. As the highest municipality in Spain, Vilaflor sits at an altitude of 1,400 meters above sea level and is surrounded by stunning pine forests.

Vilaflor

The village is located just 7 kilometres north of San Miguel de Abona and 51 kilometres southwest of the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

One of the main attractions of Vilaflor is its proximity to Mount Teide, which is the highest peak in Spain and the third-largest volcano in the world. The mountain is located just a short drive from the village and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Visitors can take a cable car to the summit of the mountain to enjoy panoramic views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean.

Despite its high altitude, Vilaflor enjoys a mild climate throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 18 to 25 degrees Celsius. The village is a popular destination for hikers and nature lovers, who come to explore the beautiful forests and trails that surround the area.

Vilaflor is also home to several historic landmarks and cultural attractions, including the Church of San Pedro Apostol, which dates back to the 17th century.

The village is also known for its traditional architecture and charming narrow streets, which are lined with colourful houses and small shops.

History and Culture in Vilaflor

Vilaflor is a municipality and village located in the south-central part of the island of Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, Spain. The village has a rich history and culture that dates back to the early 16th century.

One of the most important cultural sites in Vilaflor is the Hermano Pedro’s Shrine, which is dedicated to the first Canarian saint, Pedro de San José de Betancur. This shrine is a place of pilgrimage for many locals and visitors alike.

The Iglesia San Pedro Apostol is another important cultural site in Vilaflor. This church was built in the mid-17th century and is known for its Canarian-style Latin cross layout and Mudejar coffered ceilings.

La Casa de los Soler is a historic building in Vilaflor that dates back to the 16th century. This building was once owned by the Catalan merchant Pedro Soler and his wife, Juana de Padilla, who declared its foundation in 1525. Today, the building is used as a cultural centre and museum.

The Plaza Obispo Pérez Cáceres is a beautiful square located in the heart of Vilaflor. This square is surrounded by historic buildings and is a popular spot for locals and tourists to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.

Finally, Vilaflor is known for its traditional rosette embroidery, which is a style of embroidery that has been passed down from generation to generation. This embroidery is known for its intricate designs and vibrant colours and is a popular souvenir for visitors to Vilaflor.

Natural Beauty of the Vilaflor and the area around

Hiking in Vilaflor Tenerife

As I explore Vilaflor, I am struck by the indescribable natural beauty that surrounds me. The village is nestled in a mountainous region in the southern part of Tenerife, and it is surrounded by breathtaking landscapes that are home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Flora

One of the most striking features of Vilaflor‘s natural beauty is its abundance of pine trees. These trees dominate the landscape and provide a stunning backdrop to the village.

The most famous of these trees is El Pino Gordo, which is over 800 years old and is considered the largest pine tree in Tenerife.

In addition to the pine trees, Vilaflor is also home to a variety of other plant life. The village is surrounded by vineyards, which produce some of the best wine in Tenerife.

The fertile soil and unique climate of the area make it the perfect place for growing grapes.

Fauna

As I explore the natural beauty of Vilaflor, I am also struck by the diverse range of wildlife that calls this area home. The village is located close to Mount Teide, which is home to a variety of animals, including the Tenerife lizard and the Teide white-tailed rat.

In addition to these animals, Vilaflor is also home to a variety of bird species, including the blue chaffinch and the Berthelot’s pipit. These birds can often be seen flying through the pine trees or perched on branches, singing their beautiful songs.

Plaza del Cristo

One of the most beautiful spots in Vilaflor is the Plaza del Cristo, a lovely central square surrounded by historic buildings. The plaza features a statue of Christ and is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike.

I enjoyed wandering around the plaza and taking in the lovely views of the surrounding countryside.

Several tourist information boards in the plaza provide helpful information about the town and its history. I found these boards to be a great resource for learning more about Vilaflor.
