The carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife needs a permanent exhibition site for tourists and anyone who wants to enjoy this traditional show throughout the year.

After the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Santa Cruz de Tenerife has the most popular and renown carnival throughout the world. What is more, in January 18th, 1980, the event was declared Celebration of International Tourist Interest by Spanish Ministry of Tourism.

This is not the only Canary celebration that holds this distinction. However, after February, the month in which the Carnival is held (although some acts may fall in January or March), the party finishes in Santa Cruz and the authorities do not take advantage of the interest that visitors show in this event.
Sergio Garcia, director of ‘Gala de la Reina’, talked about this matter with knowledge of the facts. For four years, about fifteen years ago, he was the director of ‘Carnavalverano’, a show organized the Council of Tenerife in Puerto de la Cruz that was covered by the international media.

“The council used to promote the celebration of the carnival in the entire island with a grand gala that even included a Queen of the Carnival contest. These carnivals used to be a success.

What Sergio Garcia is now proposing goes beyond holding the carnival during summer season. “This is about having a site or premises in Santa Cruz where every Saturday, for example, tourists can enjoy a great spectacle of carnival, something like Tropicana in Cuba”, explains this well known artist. He added that the Carnival exhibition could be located at the bullring which is nowadays completely abandoned.

“This building could be remodelled to become the permanent venue for the Carnival. It has to be studied whether it would be economically viable and the project would need to count with sponsors to make it a reality”, ended García.

The island will host between the 21st and the 26th of March, 2011, this international event that will bring the public closer to the multiple dimensions related to the study of the stars.

‘Discover the cosmos and change the world’ are two of the premises of the Starmus Festival that will take place in Tenerife Island between the 21st and the 26th of March, 2011. This international event will turn the island in the epicentre of astronomy and space science. The festival counts with the support of the Canary Astrophysics Institute (IAC) and it has as main goal to bring closer to the people the different dimensions in the study of the stars combining science with art and music.

Attendees will learn more about extraterrestrial life and the future of the space race by the hand of prominent researchers in this field, including several Nobel winners and key personalities in the history of space as the astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Valentina Tereshkova.

The participants will also take a look at the artistic side of astronomy, astrophotography and space through art exhibitions and the music of Tangerine Dream which will be working for the first time with the actual sounds emitted by celestial bodies.

The idea for this festival was developed by the researcher from the IAC Garik Israelian. The Starmus Festival will also honor the figure of Yuri Gagarin on the 50th anniversary of his achievement. The flight of the spacecraft Vostok 1 will be remembered by his fellows Tereshkova, the first woman cosmonaut, and Alexei Leonov, the first man to perform a spacewalk.

The festival will count with the presence of other personalities such as the former NASA astronaut Aldrin, who shared a moonwalk with Neil Armstrong in 1969, and his partner Bill Anders, who immortalized on board the Apollo 8 one of the iconic images of the twentieth century: the Earthrise photograph, which shows Earth rising above the Moon.

The organizers will not only offer the living memory of those days, but also documentary samples Soviet secret archives. The tribute to Gagarin will be one of the main activities of the Starmus Festival with the lecture series’ Discover the cosmos and change the world.

For three days, prominent researchers will address issues ranging from the classic question of whether extraterrestrial life exists to global warming or the analysis of the relationship between religion and exobiology.

This tour through the great themes of astronomy includes lessons about black holes delivered by the scientist Kip Thorne Caltech, or a lecture on exoplanets delivered by its discoverer Michel Mayor, who is a researcher at the University of Geneva.

The series also includes papers of the president of the International Astronomical Union, Robert Williams, the Nobel Prize in Physics 2009, George Smith, and the musician and astrophysicist Brian May, who will be setting out the question ¿what are we doing in space?

The event will be held on November 7th in the capital of Tenerife. The brewing company ‘Compañía Cervecera’ will be sponsoring the XX Half Marathon ‘Santa Cruz de Tenerife’ as a way to support the “Sports for All” project developed by ADEMI, a sports association for people with disabilities.

The brewing company will be donating to this association 10 Euros per each participant that finishes the race as a way to promote the development of sport activities for the disabled community of the south of the island.

The half marathon ‘Santa Cruz de Tenerife’ is organized by the culture and sports association ‘Farola del Mar’ and the sports department within the city council of Santa Cruz. In the last edition of this sports event, 694 participants finished the race, and therefore, the brewery company is estimating a donation of 7,000 Euros for this edition.

A group of employees from the brewery company will be participating in the half marathon as a way to increase the number of participants who reach the finish and to align themselves with the policy of social support that is carried out by the entity in the archipelago.

With this initiative, Compañía Cervecera intends to boost the project ‘Sports for All’ developed by ADEMI Tenerife, whose primary objective is focused on promoting sports among about a thousand people with disabilities who live in the south of the island as a way to enhance their social integration.

Likewise, the project is intended to manage adapted sports in the south of the island comprising the municipalities of Granadilla, San Miguel, Arona and Adeje. The donation of the brewery company will serve to develop sport activities at the centre for functional diversity ‘El Mojón’, managed by the municipality of Arona.

About Compañía Cervecera de Canarias

The brewing company ‘Compañía Cervecera de Canarias’ is one of the leading producers of beer at the national level and one of the main engines of economic and social development in the Canary Islands: it facilitates the creation of about 900 direct jobs and 7,000 indirect and induced jobs; it participates in the ownership of several industrial companies in the archipelago, and it gives priority to local supplies to carry out its production activities.

The company, which is part of the international group SABMiller, has more than 300 Canary entrepreneurs among its shareholders, who represent about 30% of the total and are represented by two members of the Board of Directors.

The Brewing Company produces its own beer labels ‘Dorada’ and ‘Tropical’ under the license of Carlsberg; it also distributes international brands such as Pilsner Urquell, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft, Guinness and Kilkenny and distributes other non alcoholic beverages such as Peartiser and Appletiser, Red Bull and Granini premium juices.

A few weeks ago, the city of Icod de los Vinos in Tenerife presented a series of allegations to the Tenerife Landscape Plan and to the Management Plan of the Shire Ycoden-Daute-Isla Baja, which included an interesting proposal to create in the city of Drago the first interpretation center of caves.

According to the authorities of the municipality, this is a pioneering initiative to be developed through an interpretation centers construction program in every natural and rural park of the island. In the case of Icod de los Vinos, the centre could be located in the Visitor Centre of the Wind Cave.

This way, the project would serve as a forum for the development and dissemination of scientific activity, but also as a complement to tourism.

Icod has a large underground complex of caves that includes the ‘Cueva del Viento’ (Wind Cave), and San Marcos and San Felipe caves, making it the ideal place to host the infrastructure.

The Special Land Management Plan for Tenerife’s Landscapes includes the establishment of centers for interpretation of natural areas, “being Icod the perfect city to host this space, which could be located at the ‘Finca Boquin’, which is owned by the island’s council”, said Francisco González.

In short, what the local government proposes with these initiatives is to be able to create a discussion forum, a space of research and scientific knowledge which in turn serves to promote tourism and to promote the extraordinary and unique natural corners that exist in the island.

The UNESCO included the Teide National Park in its World Heritage list in 2007 qualifying it as “one of the most rich and varied volcanic landscapes in the world”.

The Teide has always been the natural and tourist symbol of Tenerife Island. Over 3 million people visit each year this natural area.

Autumn is the perfect season to visit the highest Spanish mountain (3,718 meters). Visitors can avoid the high temperatures of the summer and the cold winter weather. The park can be reached from the four cardinal points of the island. Form the north, through the C-821 highway that goes from La Orotava to Las Cañadas (33 kilometres). From the south visitors can take the C-821 highway that goes from Vilaflor to Las Cañadas (16 kilometres). Likewise, from the east, visitors can get to the park using the C-824 highway that goes from La Laguna to El Portillo de la Villa (43 kilometres) and from the west, the park can be reached using the C-823 highway that goes form Chío to Las Cañadas (30 kilometres).

The easier and fastest way to get to the top of the mountain is using the cable car that takes tourisst to the La Rambleta station, located 3,550 metres high. However, the cable car service will be closed until the 27th of October due to its annual maintenance revision. The cable car working hours are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ascend and until 5 p.m. to descend. Resident adults pay a 12 Euros ticket and tourists a 25 Euros ticket. Children below 14 years old pay between 8 and 12.5 Euros.

Another option for the more adventurous ones is to walk up to the volcano’s peak. To do that, visitors must obtain a special pass due to safety and conservation reasons. This pass can be requested through the website Reservas de Parques Nacionales. The special pass is valid only for a determined date and hours and it allows visitors to use the ‘Telesforo Bravo’ path that leads to the peak of the mountain. It is forbidden to leave this path for any reason.

Visitors may spend the night at the national park as well. On one hand, tourist may stay at the Refugio de Altavista located at an altitude of 3,270 metres, which offers three bedrooms for up to 60 people, and also a kitchen, bathrooms, sickbay and a grocery. The price per night is 20 Euros (one night is the maximum stay time), but Canary retired people as well as Canary youths pay only 10 Euros the night. On the other hand, visitors can stay at the Parador de las Cañadas del Teide which has a spectacular view of the volcano and a restaurant that offers traditional Canary cuisine dishes. The price of a room there is 70 Euros (per two people).

For those who are travelling with children, the ecotourism company Teide Astro offers visits in the afternoons to enjoy the sunset at the Cañadas del Teide. Visitors may have dinner at the hotel and after that enjoy a guided night sky watching trip with an astronomy expert. The fee, dinner included is 55.00 Euros per adult and 27.5 Euros per chid.

http://www.20minutos.es/noticia/846758/0/otono/volcan/teide/

The most important date in the calendar of tourist exhibitions the Council of Tenerife has scheduled for the rest of this year is the World Travel Market fair that will take place between the 8th and the 11th of November in London. However, the council of the island will take special attention to the German market too.

For the rest of 2010, Tenerife Tourism Corporation has planned its participation in a dozen tourist exhibitions and among them, the World Travel Market (WTM) to be celebrated from the 8th to the 11th of November in London will be one of the most important ones to promote the tourist offer of the island in England. However, another important destination in the tourist fairs calendar is Germany, which will host three tourism fairs between November and December. The rest of the tourism exhibitions will be held in Italy, Russia, and France.

Apart from the international fairs, Tenerife will be present in several Spanish cities to participate in fairs related to tourism and special segments of the market such as golf courses, nature, and luxury and congress tourism.

Tenerife will participate in association with the Ministry of Tourism of the Canary Islands and the Government of the Canary Islands in many of these fairs. November will be the busiest month because Tenerife Tourism Corporation will be participating in eight fairs.

During October, Tenerife participated in the CIS Travel Market in Saint Petersburg (Russia) from the 13th to the 15th of October, also in the ‘TTG Incontri de Rimini’ in Italy, and it will take part in the ITS/REWE exhibition from the 28th of October to the 1st of November in Bonn, Germany.

In November, Tenerife Tourism Corporation will have a busy schedule because it will be participating between the 17th and the 21st of November in the ‘Touristik and Caravaning’ fair in Leipzig, Germany, and from the 25th to the 28th of November in the ‘XIV Feria Internacional del Turismo de Interior’ in Valladolid (Spain) and in the ‘Agrotur’ in Cornellá (Barcelona) from the 5th to the 7th of November too.

The main date in November is, however, the WTM exhibition to be held in London. The tourist offer of the island will be introduced to a hundred British journalist during a trip onboard a ship through the River Thames. Tenerife Tourism Corporation participated in this event in 2008 and according to the manager of ‘Turismo de Tenerife’, Mr. Alberto Bernabé, “it was one of our most successful promotional campaigns”.

In parallel with the participation in the WTM fair, Tenerife Tourism Corporation is planning to develop a promotional strategy with the band Ministry of Sound which will be performing in Tenerife in December 2010. Mr. Bernabé has said that they are planning to get to an arrangement with an airline to offer a charter flight between London and Tenerife to bring British tourist to the island to watch the band’s performance.

Finally, Tenerife Conventions Bureau will be present between the 30th of November and the 2nd of December in the ‘Salón de la Industria de Viaje de Negocios, Congresos e Incentivos (Eibtm)’ fair, and between the 6th and 9th of December the island will be presenting its luxury tourist offer at the Luxury Travel Market fair in Cannes, France.
