Tenerife registers a total of 759,806 tourists lodged in January and February 2010

In an official statement it is shown that the hotel establishments, due to the good results obtained in January, maintain an increase of 3.53 percent out of a total of 451,754 lodged tourists while the extra-hotel establishments show a fall of 6.63 percent over an overall number of 308,052 guests.

Four stars hotels are the ones which show a better performance in these two first months since they record an increase of 7.42 percent.

Regarding the evolution of the main issuer markets, the number of national tourists lodged in Tenerife in January and February add up to 160,572, which presumes an increase of 13.78 percent in relation to the same period of the previous year.

Foreign markets, on the other hand, had a negative performance in the two first months of the year with a total of 599,234 tourists, accumulating a fall of 4.15 percent.

British tourists, with 230,833 visitors, experiment a fall of 1.65 percent in the Island. Regarding the German market, in the accumulated of the year registers certain stability, being counted 99,630 lodged visitors in the first two months of 2010 (-0.22%).

January and February record in Tenerife 6,354,182 overnight stays in the island (-3.25%) while the occupation average in the Island is situated in an index of 59.19 percent, which means an increase of 0.11 percent with regards to the same period of the previous year.

From the beginning of the year, the staying of our visitors is 8.36 days average, having a fall of 0.21 points.

With regards to the main tourist areas, the south registers a slight fall of accommodations of 0.85 percent from a total of 594,869 tourists. On the north area 130,009 visitors where counted, a number 1.38 percent lower in relation to the same time period of the previous year.

February, having a balance of 389,714 tourists lodged in Tenerife, shows a falling of 4.02 percent in relation with the same month of the previous year.

In terms of nationalities, the Spanish market finishes the month with an increasing of 11.31 percent in the number of the lodged visitors in the Island over an overall amount of 82,827 gests in tourist establishments, maintaining a continuous path of growing in the last three months.

Regarding the foreign markets, the Island lodged in February a total of 287,265 tourists, showing a fall of 7.68 percent due to the visitors fall from the two main issuer markets, the British and the German ones.

The overnight stays registered in the month, 3,036,692, experiment a fall of 3.5 percent regarding the same month of the previous year.

The occupancy indexes of the month where situated in a 59.60 percent, a 1.82 percent lower than February 2009, and the length of the stay in the month was 8.21 days average, maintaining similar numbers than the same month of the previous year (+0.04 points). EFE

Arona receives the 2009 Reina Sofia award

This Thursday, Queen Sofia presented the 2009 Reina Sofia award to the municipality of  Arona on the island of Tenerife  for its work in improving accessibility for the disabled.  José Alberto González Reverón, mayor of the municipality, accepted the award, which was also won by the National Hospital for Paraplegics of Toledo, among Spanish entries, and the DISCAR foundation of Argentina, among foreign entries, in the  Rehabilitation and Integration category.  The city councils of Hacinas (Burgos), ,Santander, Baños de Agua Santa (Ecuador) and Evigado  (Colombia) also were recognized for their efforts in improving  accessibility.

Trinidad Jiménez, Minister of Health and Social Policy, and José María Barreda, President of Castilla – La Mancha, participated in the awards ceremony.  Both expressed their gratitude to Queen Sofia for her presence in the ceremony, because, as the minister affirmed, it demonstrates her “well-known concern for the most vulnerable people”, as well as her “permanent commitment” to the Royal Foundation on  Disability, the agency that organizes these awards.

Jiménez emphasized  the “efforts”  of the central government to achieve “a society that fully integrates handicapped people”, although, as he recognized,  ”we are aware there is still much to be done.”.
