Travel website places Tenerife in first place as favorite holiday destination for British tourists

Tenerife Island is the favorite travel destination for British tourists to spend their summer holidays. The information was provided by the British travel website Trivago, which made a ranking taking into account the number of hotel reservations made through this portal. Tenerife is above destinations such as Cyprus or Mallorca, said in a press release the Council of Tenerife.

The first vice-president of the Council and Tourism councilor, José Manuel Bermúdez, highlighted that “this is good news for us in relation with this issuing market, and we have to add that airline ticket reservations from the U.K. to Tenerife increased 300% this year during summer season. This last information was provided by the British travel website lowcostholiday.com”.
The councilor also said that “this shows that Tenerife is still the favorite destination for European tourists, and that our tourist offer is better than any other in Europe. The promotional campaigns we have been carrying out, therefore, have accomplished their purpose”.

According to the top ten ranking of favorite holiday destinations for this summer season made by trivago.com.uk, Tenerife, Cyprus and Mallorca are followed by Gran Canaria, Jersey (located in the English Channel), Madeira, Cayo Hueso (Florida, USA), Hawaii, Lanzarote (Canary Islands) and Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

The numbers of British tourists lodged in the island during the first six months of 2010, raised to 730,597 which represent a 3.06% grow in comparison with the same period of the previous year. British tourists ended in second place among the total number of tourist that chosen Tenerife to spend their holidays in 2009, only outnumbered by Spaniards. British tourists’ total number last year was 1,430,000 while Spanish tourists were 1,450,000.

Horacio Cárdenas’s art exhibition in Tenerife

The Mexican artist Horacio Cárdenas is presenting his exhibition “Reflexiones Suspendidas” (Suspended Reflections) at the Universidad de Verano de Adeje – UVA (Summer University of Adeje), formed by 15 pieces called “metáforas plásticas” (art metaphors) which were made using “henequén” fibers, a material of great resistance considered the green gold of Yucatán being used by the Maya people to make strings, ropes, carpets, rugs. The artist also used coconut fibers which have a great resistance too.

Cárdenas’s pieces of art are in accordance with the central theme of this 18th edition of the Adeje’s Summer University that is conducting courses and workshops about biodiversity, using natural materials that provide an added value to his work. This exhibition will be open till 31st of august.

“Cárdenas’s work can be seen and also touched; the pieces have volume and can be felt. His work always has a message, something that is successfully transmitted to the public”, said the art critic Daniel Gleason in an article published in “El Sol de México” journal, being absolutely right in his appreciations, because the public who has visited the exhibition at the summer university in Adeje, Tenerife, has been discovering and enjoying the art of this Mexican artist.

Cárdenas has made more than 260 exhibitions most of them individually. Some of his work includes murals, like the one exhibited for more than five years at the subway station in Pino Suárez del México, Mexico D.F. called “Y de cómo vivir mejor en ocho cómodos pasos” (eight easy steps to have a better life). He has made sculptures using “hernequén” ropes, tying public buildings as the Benito Juárez City Hall in Cancun, the Supreme Court building in Costa Rica as well as universities, schools and private buildings. His work is mentioned in the high school textbook “El Hombre y el Arte” (The man and the art).

Horacio Cárdenas was born in Mexico D.F., but he has been living in the region of Quintana Roo, Cancun, for twelve years now. He studied art at the Universidad Hispano Americana and architecture at the Universidad Intercontinental, although he defines himself as a self-taught person. Tenerife launches a promotional campaign in a European tourist channel

Tenerife, part of the Canary Islands archipelago, got underway a multimedia promotional campaign in Belgium, France and Luxemburg, through the tourist channel Liberty TV, one of the main TV networks in Europe specialized in tourism and travels.

This promotional initiative, which started at the beginning of June and will finish in September, is carried out in one of the most important tourist channels in Europe, which counts with an audience of four million people. The local Councilor of Tourism and president of Turismo de Tenerife (public entity in charge of tourist promotion in the island), José Manuel Bermúdez, said to the press that the main goal of this campaign is to “show the attractions and tourist offer of our island to the potential customers who watch this channel. Besides, we want to increase the number of visits to the official tourist website of the island,www.webtenerife.com”.

This campaign is carried out in television through this channel that have a 24-hours-a-day broadcasting in cable TV and satellite TV, and also through internet, on this channel website www.libertytv.com. The campaign includes a new advertisement spot of the island in Flemish and French, digital newsletters, banners to the Tenerife’s tourist website, online offers from tourist operators where people interested can make reservations online.

More French tourists

Bermúdez said that “France is one of our objectives, because we want to improve our presence in that market. We want to diversify our issuer markets instead of working with few ones”. In fact, the government of Tenerife is expecting to increase the number of French visitors this winter season “offering two regular direct flights from Paris through Air Europa and Iberia”.

French visitors in Tenerife last year were almost 100,000 (2.1% of the market). On the other hand, Belgian tourists were 119,438 last year, equivalent to the 2.5% of the tourists that visit the island.

The Ballet Swan Lake arrives to Tenerife in July

Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, Swan Lake, will be presented in Tenerife south next 23rd of July by the Moscow Ballet at the Magma Arte y Congresos de Costa Adeje (conference and events center in Adeje).

Tickets will be sold at the box office of this center and they will cost between 20 and 35 euros.

The choreography is in charge of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, and it will be performed by some of the best ballet dancers from Russian ballet companies like the Bolshoi or the Stanislavsky.

Since its foundation, the Moscow Ballet has presented more than one thousand shows, and performed 60 world tours visiting countries such as Japan, China, Taiwan, Italy, Switzerland, England and Spain.

In 1991, this ballet company was chosen by the renowned ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev for his last European tour.

Apart from the Swan Lake, this ballet company has performed other famous ballet plays such as “Nutcracker”, “Sleeping Beauty”, “Midsummer Night’s Dream” and new productions such as “Carmen”, “Don Quijote” and “Romeo and Juliet”.

This event at the Magma Arte & Congresos is intended to introduce classical music in its cultural calendar which already includes several plays for children.

Akon, author of the Fifa World Cup South Africa 2010 official song, will be presenting a show in Tenerife next August

One month after the closure ceremony of the Fifa World Cup South Africa 2010, the American singer with Senegalese background, Akon, will be presenting a show in Tenerife.

This artist, author of the song entitled “Oh, Africa” which became an anthem in this football championship, has chosen Tenerife as only date in Spain according to the information provided by Rider Productions.

The show will take place at the Adeje’s football pitch next 12th of August as part of  “The Party 2010 Festival” produced by Tantoarte and Rider Productions.

Akon was nominee for four Grammy Awards in 2008 for his album “Konvicted” being the first artist in music history to occupy the first and second place in the Billboard Hot 100 ranking twice.

Akon will be presenting in Tenerife some songs of his last album “Freedom” which has his personal signature fusing Hip-Hop, Soul and R&B, a formula that made him occupy the first place in many music rankings.

The press release said that Akon is working in new songs with Lady Gaga and he has collaborated in the last Rihanna’s album.
